Every year I take advantage of the opportunity to raise money for the Tulsa SPCA through the Route 66 Marathon because it provides the possibility of having a portion of the donations matched.
So far in 2019 the Tulsa SPCA has taken in 959 animals and placed 918. We’ve spayed/neutered 2,847 dogs and cats, provided 10,572 vaccinations and 1,499 microchips, investigated 649 cruelty complaints and distributed over 11,500 lbs. of food to 964 animals in need as well as provided assistance during the historic flooding this spring and much more.
One of the animals we assisted this year is a white, pit bull mix we’ve named Twiggy. We received a cruelty complaint from a contractor who had been performing work and noticed an emaciated dog on the adjacent property. Once we arrived, we learned the contractor had been working at the location for 6 weeks and the house next door was vacant the entire time. It is unclear why the dog wasn’t noticed prior, but by the time we arrived, the situation was critical. We immediately removed the dog and brought him to our clinic.
At intake Twiggy weighed 29 lbs., was critically dehydrated and anemic due to a flea and worm infestation. We immediately began treatment and hoped for the best. I requested Tulsa Animal Welfare pursue charges against the owners who abandoned Twiggy, and we turned in our report and supporting documentation to the city.
Over the next several days, we were happy to see Twiggy improving. He went home with staff each day to get extra attention and after just 12 days had blossomed and increased his weight to 42 lbs.
We are still caring for Twiggy while we wait for the DA to decide whether or not to pursue charges. His resilience and love for humans amazes us because we know what he went through at the hands of someone who was supposed to love and care for him. Twiggy now weighs 51 lbs. and is able to run, play and begin to trust humans again.
I wish I could say Twiggy was the first animal we’d assisted in this way, or that he would be the last. But, unfortunately, we know there will be more. Your support of our work allows us to continue saving lives like his. Please use this link haku.ly/e97d2827 to make a tax-deductible donation to the Tulsa SPCA through my Route 66 Run efforts.
Thank you so much.
Update: We have been informed the DA is taking the case! We hope the appropriate person or people will be held responsible for their crime. In the meantime we will continue to care for Twiggy and show him the love he deserves. ...
