Mission & History

A Century of Compassion, A Future of Hope

Tulsa SPCA has been a cornerstone of animal welfare in northeastern Oklahoma for more than a century. Founded in 1913 by a group of Tulsa citizens, the organization began with a deep concern for homeless dogs and cats, as well as the protection of working animals used on farms and in the region’s early mining and oil industries. From the very beginning, the Tulsa SPCA has reflected the values of a growing community that believed animals deserved compassion, protection, and humane care.

As Tulsa has grown and evolved, so has the mission of Tulsa SPCA. Today, that mission is clear and focused: to improve the lives of dogs and cats, and their human companions. The organization provides safe, transitional shelter and medical care for animals in need, while working to place every dog and cat into a loving, permanent home. What started as a grassroots effort has grown into one of the region’s most trusted and impactful animal welfare organizations.

Tulsa SPCA goes beyond sheltering by supporting the full journey of pet ownership. Through thoughtful adoption matching, affordable veterinary care, and resources that help families keep their pets, the organization is committed to strengthening the human-animal bond at every stage. Every dog and cat that comes through its doors is given not just care, but a real opportunity for a better life.

At its core, Tulsa SPCA is powered by community. Volunteers, donors, and supporters make it possible to care for thousands of animals each year and extend services to families across the region. Operating independently and fueled by generosity, Tulsa SPCA continues to expand its reach and impact while staying true to the values it was founded on more than 100 years ago.

Today, the organization stands as both a reflection of its history and a forward-looking leader in animal welfare. With a commitment to compassion, accessibility, and innovation, Tulsa SPCA is working to ensure that every dog and cat has a safe place to land and every family has the opportunity to experience the joy of a lifelong bond.
