Frequently Asked Questions
We know that adopting a pet is a big decision and it’s natural to have questions. We’ve put together answers to the most common questions we hear from potential adopters to help make the process as clear and easy as possible. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for below, our team is always happy to help — just give us a call or stop by the shelter. DOGS: Under 5 months old – $166 | Over 5 months old – $116
CATS: Under 5 months old – $106 | Over 5 months old – $96
Every animal that comes through Tulsa SPCA is vaccinated, altered, dewormed, microchipped, and on heartworm prevention (dogs) and flea/tick prevention (dogs and cats).
You will also receive:
- A 3lb bag of the food they are currently eating to help get you started or assist with transitioning to a new food
- All current medical records
- Information and resources on how to help your new pet adjust to life in a new home
We want every adoption to be successful and do everything we can to help make the transition from shelter life to home life as smooth as possible. Our team is always available if you have any questions after adoption.
We only require an appointment if an animal is in foster care. You can stop by our shelter any time during our open hours to meet any animal you would like! If there is an animal in foster that you would like to meet, please email adoptions@tulsaspca.org or call 918-428-7722 ext. 1003
Tulsa SPCA staff members are Fear Free certified and work hard to reduce stress for the animals in our care whenever possible. Constant foot traffic through the shelter halls, especially from unfamiliar people, can increase stress and anxiety levels for many dogs.
To help create a calmer environment, visitors do not walk through the dog housing areas. Instead, our team will introduce you to dogs you are interested in meeting. All available animals can be viewed on our website, and our knowledgeable pet care staff can help match you with pets based on personality, energy level, and lifestyle fit.
Tulsa SPCA operates on a first come, first serve basis. Anyone currently at the shelter has first priority for adoption, even if another adopter has an approved application.
Once your application has been approved, we can place a 24 hour hold on an animal with payment. If you receive an approval email, you can call our adoption line or email adoptions@tulsaspca.org to request a payment link.
Please be sure to check your spam or junk folder, as adoption emails may occasionally be filtered out of your primary inbox.
You will need an ID when you adopt one of our animals.
We recommend bringing a cat carrier if you are adopting a cat, and a leash and collar if you are adopting a dog. If you forget or do not have these items with you, we do have supplies available for purchase.
Cardboard cat carriers are available for $6. Dog leashes and collars are also available for purchase at $6 each, or $10 for a leash and collar set.
Due to the constantly changing population of animals in our care, we are unable to provide notifications for specific breeds or sizes of dogs.
The best way to stay up to date with available animals is to regularly check our website, which updates automatically whenever a new animal becomes available for adoption.
